This week's lesson is where you start career planning. You’ll identify what steps are necessary to take you from where you are now, to where you ultimately want to be... including taking any intermediate steps along the way. By the end of this week, you’ll know whether you need to re-train, develop new skills or knowledge, or gain new work experiences, and what to do to get those skills, knowledge or experiences. You’ll map out the path from your current job to your dream job, and pinpoint the very next job to aim for.

Week 3: Researching Potential Employers

In Week 3 you’ll find out who has the (next) job you want. You’ll discover how to use the Internet, and all the various sites and resources you can use to research companies on the Net. You’ll also learn how to keep your “ears open” and be attuned to what people around you are doing and saying that may yield valuable job related information. And you’ll see how to use the news media, trade media, information published by professional associations, and networking events, to learn more about the organizations that may have a job opportunity for you. Finally, you’ll learn how to approach such companies directly to give you an Insider edge!

Week 4: Job Sites and Recruitment Firms

Who is advertising the job you want? In some cases, your best bet as a job seeker is to head straight for the “help wanted” listings on the job sites, or in the job ads in the relevant newspapers or trade papers, or even contact recruitment firms directly, to see if anyone is advertising the job you want. So in this week’s lesson, we’ll explain how to use the job sites, how to interpret job ads, and how to turn recruitment firms into job seeking missiles working – as much as they can – on your behalf!

Fieldwork: Interpret a job ad and target job sites and recruitment firms.

Week 5: Understanding The Job

Once you’re clear on a particular job, you’ll need to clearly understand what the job involves, who you’ll be working with, what the company is like, and other relevant details. This week you’ll learn how to research and understand the job in detail. You’ll also learn how to find out those details that may be eluding you: who to contact and what to say to them. Armed with a solid grasp of the job, you’ll be in a position to prepare a Job Fulfillment Description, which will give you an incredible advantage when it comes to applying for the job. At the very least, being aware of the nitty-gritty elements of the job will allow you to confidently discuss the job – and how you plan to do it – during the job interview.

Week 6: Preparing Your Resume and Cover Letter

In Week 6 you’ll discover how to prepare your job application: your resume, cover letter and Job Fulfillment Description (JFD). We won’t spend too much time on your JFD, since we covered that last week, but we will discuss in detail how to put together a killer resume and cover letter that “sells” you to the recruiter or employer. This is a lesson not to be missed!

Week 7: Preparing For The Job Interview

If your job application is successful, you’ll be invited to a job interview... and that means... fine-tuning your job interview skills! In Week 7 you’ll discover exactly what you need to focus on in order to adequately prepare for the job interview.
